While meeting mamas across the US on our #MHROADTRIP, we’re giving back to their communities! Help us support mamas and babies by getting involved in charities like the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, or by purchasing our Mamma Charity Tee. $2 per tee is donated to these nonprofit organizations benefiting mothers & babies in need – we like to call it a “chari-tee.”
MEET UNIVERSITY OF IOWA STEAD FAMILY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Iowa mother, Isabel, is excited to share the wonderful work that the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is doing in the field of pediatric health care. They have the only nationally ranked Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the state of Iowa, are one of the few such ranked NICU’s in the Midwest, and are proud to provide care for their patients from infancy through childhood.
University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital has been dedicated to meeting the health care needs of children and families since 1919. As Iowa’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, we provide care for children from birth to young adulthood. Services range from promoting wellness to the care of general childhood illness, surgery, traumatic injuries, life-threatening and chronic illnesses, and developmental disabilities. As part of an academic medical center, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital also performs groundbreaking research to help solve the mysteries of childhood diseases, in addition to training the next generation of health care professionals.
How do you assist mothers & children?
We have a nationally ranked Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is actually the only one in the state of Iowa. The NICO holds 88 beds for infants born needing medical intervention. We also have the only neonatal hemodynamics program in the country. Neonatal hemodynamics is an advanced technique that can monitor the cardiovascular health of preterm babies. This process provides much more precise information about the baby’s heart and blood flow than traditional methods can. Our program is a national leader in the use of neonatal hemodynamics to care for babies in the NICU. We’re also a trusted source of expertise and training for other U.S. health facilities as they turn to us for help in establishing their own neonatal hemodynamics programs.
Statistics on work with in vitro fertilization (IVF):
Through the University of Iowa hospital network, we have a wonderful gynecology program that values mothers and children and seeks to provide them with the highest quality of care. This includes our top ranked in vitro fertilization (IVF) program with great outcomes. Established in 1987, the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care was Iowa's first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program, which as of 2020 has led to more than 7,000 babies (and counting!) Our delivery rate has remained consistently above the national average per oocyte retrieval for women under age 35. We are known as a national leader for elective single embryo transfers that contribute to health and safety of mother and child. Finally, we were the first medical center in Iowa to establish a formal donor embryo program.
Level IV NICU
A Level IV NICU is the highest designation possible as defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics. UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is able to care for the smallest and sickest infants. In our NICU, our survival rate is more than 95 percent, which ranks among the best of any NICU in the country.
Level 1 Trauma Center
As the first and only hospital in Iowa to earn designation as a Level 1 Trauma Center for pediatrics from the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is proud to have this designation since 2009. This 2018 designation is valid for a three-year period and was first received in 2009-present.
Member, Children’s Tumor Foundation Neurofibromatosis Clinic Network
We are the only hospital in Iowa recognized as a member of the Children’s Tumor Foundation Neurofibromatosis Clinic Network. UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital first became a member in 2010 and membership has been renewed annually since.
Verified Burn Treatment Center
UI Hospitals & Clinics is home to the only burn treatment center in Iowa verified by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association. This verification is valid for three years.
