With the arrival of summer comes new adventures aplenty, and our newest road trip mama, Oma, talks us through her favorite spots in Houston for just that.
Biscuit Paint Wall – Montrose
Snapping a photo in front of this colorful Houston wall is a road trip must-do. The wall is located on the side of Biscuit Home, a home goods store in Montrose. So once you take a gander through aisles of throw pillows and dinnerware, don’t forget to head outside for a kaleidoscope photo experience that will add a pop of color to your social media grid. Oma enjoys this area as a whole. “The Biscuit Paint Wall is located in the neighborhood of Montrose, which is known for its LGBTQ+ community, and is also home to lots of eclectic eateries, vintage stores, and great places to have a day brunch or even a night on the town.”
Houston Graffiti Building
Not all tourist attractions live up to the hype, but this one sure does. Located on Chartres Street in the heart of downtown Houston, people come from far and wide to do a photoshoot here. The vibrant colors and talented artwork done by local artists is sure to put a smile on your face. Oma especially loves this spot: “these walls really do talk with all sorts of colorful, crazy photo options.”
For this Houston mama, it tells an important story. “It’s an amazing spot where local artists have used the buildings as their canvas to tell the colorful story of Houston. Downtown is also one of my favorite places because of how the tall architecture creates an amazing skyline, providing a beautiful backdrop to the city.”
Art Blocks on Main Street
Another downtown hotspot is the Art Blocks project. Here, you’ll stumble upon more local art & inspiring installations bursting with saturated tones. Per downtown Houston’s website, the purpose of Art Blocks is to “enhance the pedestrian experience.” You’ll see window installations in-between storefronts that reflect everything from vintage comic books to the current culture as well as murals & sculptures. Remember to look up!
Buffalo Bayou Park
It’s hard to resist a sprawling green park when visiting any city, especially this green space. Stretching from Shepherd Drive to Sabine Street, Buffalo Bayou Park is yours for the taking. Whether you want to go for a leisurely walk and admire the gardens, a bike ride for some exercise, or run through one of the many trails, it’s one item on your Houston to-do list you’ll want to cross off. Not to mention the lush landscaping throughout and, of course, The Water Works – the elevated park entry point that provides breathtaking views of the skyline.
