HOW TO HOST A VIRTUAL BABY SHOWER

In these odd times, we’ve all had to find new and innovative ways of enjoying our usual traditions.

A favorite tradition for expectant mothers is to have a baby shower to celebrate. Right now, many mamas-to-be still don’t feel comfortable in big groups of people, but thanks to technology we’re still able to have virtual celebrations.

  • Just like a traditional baby shower, it’s a good idea to send invitations out well ahead of time to make sure everyone can make time to attend.

  • You should include your shipping address on the invitation for gifts to be mailed directly to you. Definitely be sure to include it on your registry too.

  • Make it very clear that this is a virtual eventas this is still a newer concept.

  • You can send invitations via snail mail but you should also send an e-vite. This will make it easier for guests to login.

  • Include your phone number in case they need to text you on the party day with any questions.

  • You could even suggest on the invite that guests pour themselves a mimosa or glass of champagne to enjoy during the party!

What to do during the virtual baby shower:
During your virtual baby shower, everyone gets together on a video platform like Zoom, Google Hangout, or Facebook Live.

  • A great way to kick it off is to make sure everyone is introduced to each other to break the ice a little.
  • Just like a regular baby shower, you might want to play a fun game before jumping into opening gifts. Quizzes are a non-cheesy game idea that would be great to play virtually.
  • Then open your gifts on camera so everyone can see what you got, just as you would if you were in person. If you have family or friends with you, consider connecting your computer up to a TV so it’s easier for everyone to see.
  • One of the perks of having a virtual baby shower is sending virtual thank you notes. It’s so much easier!

Pro tip:Make sure your mic and camera are working before you start the virtual baby shower. Nothing is worse than hosting a virtual party only to discover your computer isn’t working properly. Remember to mute everyone besides the person that is speaking to avoid distracting background noise.

How to do a drive-by baby shower
If the idea of a virtual baby shower doesn’t excite you, then a drive-by baby shower may be better. This is where you invite people to drive by, honk, wave and drop off their gifts at a specific time without getting out of the car. It gives you the opportunity to see people face to face in a safe setting, outside and at a distance. Masks could also be worn. Since this is a new concept, be sure to be very clear on the invitation that it is a drive by party.

  • You can decorate your front yard and set up a party table just like you normally would for a baby shower.
  • Giant letters with a balloon garland bring the wow factor and make for a great photo opp for the mama-to-be.
  • Fun favor ideas include cookies to-go or mini champagne bottles.

For expectant mamas who want to remain cautious, these are some great no-fuss alternatives. They allow moms a great way to celebrate their soon-to-be new arrival without compromising safety. We actually hope virtual baby showers are here to stay for long distance friends and family. If you choose a socially distanced baby shower, you can still dress up, decorate and get those gorgeous photos, mama. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some cake, too!
